Citations in Document

It is important as you write to provide credit to the work of others by providing both an in-text citation and full reference at the end of your paper. [1]

IEEE citation style uses a numerical system of citation:

  • Citations are numbered in the order in which they appear.
  • Once cited, the same number is used for all additional references in paper/report
  • Each reference number should be enclosed in brackets [ ]
    • brackets appear on same line as text
    • before punctuation
    • space before the bracket.
  • Each citation corresponds to a numbered reference containing the publication information about source in reference list at end of document.
  • When referencing multiple sources:
    • List each reference number separately with a comma -  [2], [4], [5] or [2, 4, 5]
    • Dash between each reference - [6] - [10] or [6-10]
  • When citing different pages within a source use the following:  [2, pp. 17-26], [2, Ch. 5, pp. 136-149] or [2, Fig. 5]
