AMA Citation Style

Overview of using AMA to format citations

Paper Formatting Guidelines

Check with your instructor for specific formatting for margins, title page, page numbers, font size, etc.

DPT program students should refer to the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program Student Handbook  provided in Blackboard for specifications.

In-Text Citations:

  • References are numbered in consecutive order in the body of the paper. If using a resource multiple times in one paper, use the same number throughout.
  • Use superscript arabic numerals to cite materials (example, 1)

See last item to the left for more information.

Reference List Guidelines

  • References are found at the end of a paper with the page entitled, "Reference List."
  • Each item should be listed in numerical order of appearance and single-spaced.
  • Author's names are inverted and use only initials (with no periods) for first and middle names.

Reference Abbreviations:

  • Names of journals are abbreviated in reference citation. See Citing a Journal Article (on left) for more information.
  • Within text of paper, names of states should be spelled out in full when they stand alone otherwise postal code abbreviations should be used.
